Suburb Profile

Shire of Banyule

The City of Banyule, located in Melbourne's north-east suburbs, contains a diversity of real estate.  This ranges from 1880s housing in established areas such as Ivanhoe and Heidelberg, to more recent growth pockets such as suburban St Helena.

The 20 suburbs of the City of Banyule are on approximately 63 square kilometres north-east of central Melbourne and include: Bellfield, Briar Hill, Bundoora, Eaglemont, Eltham North, Greensborough, Heidelberg, Heidelberg Heights, Heidelberg West, Ivanhoe, Ivanhoe East, Lower Plenty, Macleod, Montmorency, Rosanna, St Helena, Viewbank, Watsonia, Watsonia North and Yallambie.

Early development in Banyule dates from the 1840s and 1850s, with the earliest areas of settlement being Heidelberg and Ivanhoe.  The construction of the railway to Hurstbridge encouraged the development of areas such as Eaglemont and Rosanna.  There was significant growth in Banyule post-war, as suburbs such as Macleod, Watsonia, Greensborough, and Heidelberg West expanded.

Banyule Real Estate is undulating, apart from some relatively flat land in the west and on the river floodplains.  The City of Banyule is renowned for its open spaces and plentiful parklands, especially along the Yarra and Plenty rivers.  Banyule is an established residential real estate area that is continuing to attract real estate development in its existing areas.

Real estate in the City of Banyule is increasingly popular as the area offers many excellent community leisure facilities.  These facilities include indoor aquatics and fitness centres contained at Ivanhoe, West Heidelberg, Watsonia and Greensborough.  Additionally, Greensborough, in the City of Banyule, has a synthetic athletics track, and while a hockey and indoor netball stadium can be found at Bellfield and Macleod respectively, there are also numerous other playing fields, tennis and bowling clubs found throughout the City of Banyule.

In terms of non-organisational sporting activities; cycling and walking through the City of Banyule is another popular pastime.  It is particularly made enjoyable by the many cycling and walking tracks contained throughout the city, including those along the Yarra and Plenty rivers and nearby Darebin Creek.
