Mernda: A stone’s throw away from everything yet far from the busy streets
Located in the City of Whittlesea, just a half-hour away from Melbourne’s Central Business District (CBD) is the beautiful town of Mernda. Mernda gets its name from a Wurjundjeri word meaning Earth.
The area was formerly known as Morang and Yan Yean until 1893, when it was renamed Yan Yean South. It was only in 1913 when its name was changed to Mernda.
Once a small town with only a school, a bakery, a church, a mechanic’s institute, and a railway, it has now transformed into a growing urbanized district. It is now filled with many improved housing subdivisions, some of which are: Mernda Villages, Everton Gardens, Bridge Inn Rise and Woodland Waters.
Living in Mernda
Mernda was named one of the fastest growing suburbs in the whole of Victoria. Now highly modernized, real estate in Mernda offers all types of land for sale, houses for sale, and properties for rent.
New subdivisions are being built and expanded all over the area. New communities such as Hawkstowe, Woodland Waters, Mernda Ridge, Everton Gardens, Bridge Inn Rise, Mernda Villages, Renaissance Rise, and Riverdale are perfect places to buy a house or buy land in Mernda.
Communities within the area are generally secluded but with many modern estates and establishments – a perfect environment for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
Mernda has two primary schools: Mernda Primary School and St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School. It also houses the Acacia College – Mernda Campus, the Gilson College, and the Ivanhoe Grammar School along Bridge Inn Road.
Sold results show that a house for sale in Mernda can be bought for as low as $300,000 up to $450,000. The neighborhood comprises exclusively of separate houses; there are no units or flats in Mernda. Median monthly mortgage is around $2167.
Mernda is not only complete and self-sufficient, but it is also in a strategic location, as it is near other schools, stores, medical facilities, and other sports facilities. For instance, it’s only a ten-minute drive from the Westfield Plenty Valley Shopping Center as well as the Pacific Epping.
Kalkallo Road features the Mernda Villages Shopping Centre, which includes the Woolworths supermarket and ten other specialty stores. The shopping center has a large area dedicated to car and bicycle parking facilities. It also has a café, fastfood outlets with dining areas, and even a pharmacy. Right across the street from Woolworths supermarket is the Mernda Village Medical & Dental that provides for the medical needs of the residents and other people in the area. It’s a one stop shop for almost everything.
Within the area is the lovely Schotters Park where Mernda residents can walk, bike, and enjoy the environment. The nearby Plenty Gorge Park offers mile-long stretches of hilly scenery for camping, trekking, and bird watching.
Local Sporting Scene
Mernda has a variety of sporting teams including the Mernda Football Club (also known as The Demons) and the Mernda Cricket Club. Both clubs are successful in their own right, with the former winning a total of 18 Premierships and the latter a Barclay Shield winner in 2008-09.
